January 6th is the day of Epiphany, when Christians mark the arrival of the wise men (no specific number) who arrived from the East following a star.
The dictionary describes epiphany as ‘an illuminating discovery, realisation, or disclosure, often unexpected’ and this is what happened at the end of the voyage of the wise men. They came expecting to find a baby of royal blood and instead found an ‘ordinary’ family living in a house in Bethlehem.
In the story in Matthew’s gospel we find that these men
- sought truth and wisdom
- set out in faith to find out where the star would lead them to
- sought help from other people as they tried to find the king
- accepted what God lead them to and believed in it
We too are on a journey and may we have the same attitude as the Magi.
