On Friday 14th July the URC hosted a lunchtime concert given by a talented trio called “Trillium”, which is a three-petaled flower. Trillium consists of Sheilagh Armitt, a soprano, Sue Edmonds, a flautist, and Mary Westley, a pianist. The group have given occasional concerts over the last 30 years, but this was the first time they have performed in Romsey.
At the URC they performed a series of folk songs including “She’s like the Swallow”, “Where the Gentle Avon Flows” and “The Lark in the Clear Air”. The flute and soprano blended beautifully, and sometimes by way of a change the soprano sang alone, though they were always supported by the piano. As well as the folk songs , Le Violette, a more formal song by Scarlatti, was performed. To provide a contrast the flute played two Piazzolla tangos, works which were alternately nimble and soaring.
The concert concluded with some sacred works; “Panis Angelicus”, “Brother James’s Air”, and John Rutter’s “For the Beauty of the Earth”.
The URC is an excellent venue for a chamber group, and it was well appreciated by Trillium.
